Blakiston's fish owl, the world's largest living owl species, is a rare bird found only in riparian forests of northeast Asia, including Japan, China, and the Russian Far East. Standing up to 75 cm tall with a 190 cm wingspan and weighing as much as 4.6 kg, the Blakiston's fish owl is a prodigious avian predator. However, this fascinating bird now faces extinction due to loss and fragmentation of its forest habitat, especially the big, old trees it requires for nesting. Blakiston's fish owl is currently listed as endangered by the IUCN, with only around 1,000 to 1,500 individuals estimated to remain in the wild.
