Kamigata Museum 上方博物館

Can you see the white cat with a mischievous smile and laughing eyes placed on the curved wall and whose chest is decorated with delicate drawings? This cat, ladies and gentlemen, is the hallmark of this unique museum with a permanent exhibition of Kamigata Ukiyoe prints.

These pieces come from Kamigata, the name given in the Edo period (1603-1868) to the Osaka - Kyoto area where they were carved and sold. Their realistic appearance differentiates them from Edo prints (now Tokyo). They insist on the living and on the personality of the characters represented. Thus, you can observe sumptuous works featuring kabuki actors, bewitching geisha, as well as simple craftsmen at work. About fifty ukiyo-e (print style or "images from the floating world") are included in this small museum.
