Explore the heart of Japan!

Both coastal and mountainous cities, Nagano and Niigata are a taste of the countryside not too far from Tokyo. On the way to Nagano, explore Karuizawa, a luxurious hotspring resort. Further on, Nagano: made famous by the 1998 Winter Olympics, today it is a top spot for Buddhist pilgrimages and walks in the beautiful Japanese Alps.

Niigata is an area well-known throughout the country for its local produce, such as rice. A modern city, it is also one of the most important fishing ports. This city is also the gateway to Sado Island, a special place where nature and hiking reign supreme.

Both Nagano and Niigata are part of the greater Japanese Alps area, defined by the distinct mountain range that cuts through the center of Honshu. Also here, Takayama in Gifu Prefecture is a lovely getaway. Gifu and Nagano are two of the very few prefectures in Japan that are fully landlocked, with rich mountain peaks and lush rivers flowing through the landscape. The JR East Nagano-Niigata East allows for direct access to Takayama via bus departing from Matsumoto in Nagano.

This pass is ideal for exploring the central part of Japan, with the greater Tokyo area filled with bustling city centers and stylish, calm neighborhoods. Take a bit of a detour out using JR transportation and head out to Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture, home to many temples and shrines and a popular getaway for warm onsens. Out towards Shizuoka, the town of Atami is a seaside getaway home to gorgeous views and the Atami Museum of Art, one of the most lauded institutions in the country.
